Understanding Your Word Counter Output Results

Here's what each metric means in simple terms:

• Words — A word is any group of one or more letters or numbers. "Thirty" and "30" both count. Standalone symbols like @, %, or & do not count on their own. Hyphenated words count as one word — "state-of-the-art" and "father-in-law" are each a single word, as long as a true hyphen is used. An em dash breaks this rule: "thirty—five" counts as two words. Contractions with a standard apostrophe, such as "we'll" (or "there will"), also count as one word.
• SPACES — Every type of space counts — the regular space, non-breaking spaces, as well as thin, em, and en spaces. Each is measured as a single character.
• Line breaks — A line break technically consists of two invisible characters: a line feed (LF) and a carriage return (CR). This tool counts them together as one unit to keep your results simple.
• CHARACTERS (WITH SPACES) — Your full character count. This includes every visible letter, number, and punctuation mark plus all whitespace characters — spaces and line breaks included.
